Charity Begins in Your Backyard!

The new year is the time for resolutions - weight loss, saving money, clean the attic/garage or a new hairdo.  We should make it a point to add paying it forward or giving back on our list.  "Each one, help one" should be the new mantra. So while you cleaning & purging, gather those old clothes and trinkets you haven't dusted in a few years & give them to AmVets or Good Will who provide training programs for the homeless, disabled or underprivileged.  Better yet, visit www.givelocally.net, a micro-donation social network whose main goal is find someone or family in need & directly help them.  Many times we have given money to an organization who helps a group of people; however 35% of the donation is used for administrative purposes.  With Givelocally.net you can choose a recipient thru an online profile - the person or family you choose might have experienced a similar hardship to your own or someone you know.  Givelocally.net accepts applications from those needing assistance, rigorously screens the applicants & confirms their needs thru 3rd parties.  If you know anyone that can benefit from the kindness of the website, you can suggest or recommend anyone.  Donations from the site is used to pay tuition, medical bills, rent, food and utility bills & cash support is giving directly to bill collectors, not the recipient! In two and a half years, Givelocally.net has helped raise $200,000.

I'm loving the December 2012 issue of Black Enterprise! Great article on "The Business of Giving Back."

Need To Save for a Goal or Bucket List Item?

Hi Everyone!  This is my first blog and I'm really excited about it.  I'm a magazine-aholic which means I DEVOUR magazines any chance I get.  I get a lot of magazines and I go to the library and read magazines.  I get a great wealth of information from my magazines and I have shared info to my family and friends over the years.  I'll even copy or rip out articles and mail to others (I inherited this habit from my mother - who still does it), tweet or post as a status on Facebook.  Well, I got the great idea that I should share all this great information with the world...well social media that connects to the world.  It's my way of paying it forward. Plus I love free so most everything I post will be free unless it's something I can't live without!

My first great discovery is from Black Enterprise magazine from the Dec 2012 issue (yes friends I'm a little behind the magazine stack):

www.smartypig.com (free iPhone app available too) is a free FDIC insured online savings account that let's you put money aside to save for a specific goal which funnels money from your savings or checking acct! You can even use social media to let your peeps donate to your goal!!  I want to save for my birthday trip next year so I'm going to utilize this app on my phone to save for the trip!
